Common problems with valves with diffusers – and how to avoid them

Valves with actuators or valve assemblies are used in many types of systems where flows need to be controlled automatically. In most cases, they work as they should, but when something isn't right, it can quickly affect the whole process.

Many of the most common problems are not due to the product itself, but to how the valve and actuator have been selected, installed or used. By understanding what can go wrong, it is also easier to avoid disruptions in the facility.

The valve does not open or close properly

A common problem is that the valve does not move as expected, even though the control system sends a signal. This may be because the signal does not reach the operator, but also because the actuator does not have enough torque to handle the load.

For example, it may be an incorrect dimensioning right from the start. If the valve is working against high pressure or if the medium creates resistance, a device that is adapted to the task is required. By sizing the valve and actuator together, the  risk of the valve getting stuck or not closing correctly is reduced.

Incorrectly dimensioned actuator

The choice of actuator has a major impact on how the valve package works in practice. A diffuser that is too weak can have difficulty opening or closing the valve, while an oversized diffuser can lead to unnecessary wear over time.

Pneumatic solutions, such as the AL 77, provide high torque where it is needed most, while other types such as the AL 79 work with a more even torque across the entire movement. Choosing the right type of diffuser based on valve and application is crucial for everything to work stably over time.

Compressed air or issues with the power supply

Automated valve assemblies rely on a working energy source. For pneumatic systems, this means a stable supply of clean compressed air, while electrical solutions require a reliable power supply.

If the compressed air fluctuates or if there are disturbances in the electrical system, the valve may react slowly or not at all. In many cases, it is a matter of variations in pressure or moisture and impurities in the compressed air.

Electric actuators, such as the AL 78, are often self-inhibiting and retain their position in the event of a power failure, but here too it is important that the system is installed and dimensioned correctly.

Wear and Error Product Selection

The service life of the valve is greatly affected by the media it is working with. Aggressive fluids, high temperatures, or particles in the medium can lead to wear on seals and internal components.

If the choice of material is not adapted to the application, performance can deteriorate over time. By taking into account media, temperature and pressure already when selecting valve packages, many problems can be avoided before they occur.

Incorrect installation or assembly

Even a correctly sized valve assembly can have problems if installed incorrectly. It can be about incorrect assembly, lack of adjustment or that the valve package is placed in a position or environment that it is not adapted for.

Incorrect connections or tensions in the piping system can affect the valve's operation and lead to unnecessary wear. A correct installation is therefore crucial for the product to work as intended. Always consult the product's assembly instructions before assembly.

Lack of maintenance over time

Valves with actuators are normally very reliable, but regular checks are important to ensure that everything is working properly.

Small problems, such as wear on seals, can otherwise develop into major disturbances. By working preventively with maintenance and checking the valve assembly's function at regular intervals, the service life can be extended and the function maintained over time.

Need help avoiding operational problems?

Many problems with valves assemblies can be avoided through the correct dimensioning, installation and selection of components. By considering the entire system from the start, the solution becomes more stable and sustainable over time.
