ATEX

Electrical and mechanical equipment and components that are to be used in explosive environments within the EU must comply with the ATEX directive. A potentially explosive atmosphere consists of air mixtures of gas, vapor, mist, or dust, which can ignite under certain operating conditions. Organizations in the EU must follow these directives to protect employees from explosion risks in areas with explosive atmospheres. The directive applies to equipment used in explosive environments and covers a wide range of products. These products are used, for example, on offshore platforms, in petrochemical plants, mines, mills, and other areas where an explosive atmosphere could potentially occur. The equipment intended for use in these environments is regulated by technical requirements that must be applied for assessment before the equipment is placed on the European market.

ATEX Directive

The ATEX directive is divided into two directives:

  • Directive ATEX 2014/34/EU (formerly ATEX 95) (equipment).
For equipment and safety systems intended for use in explosive environments.
  • Directive ATEX 1999/92/EC (formerly ATEX 137) (workplace).
For improving the safety and health of workers who may be exposed to risks caused by explosive atmospheres.

The ATEX directive also requires the employer to classify areas where a hazardous explosive atmosphere may occur into different zones. The classification provided depends on the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere occurring and its resistance. The areas classified into zones must be protected from ignition sources. Equipment and safety systems intended for use in these areas must meet the requirements of the directive.
