IECEx

Although compliance with the ATEX directive is a mandatory requirement within the EU, it is not a universally accepted regulatory framework in the global market. However, the IECEx system (International Electrotechnical Commission for Explosive Atmospheres) is widely recognized in many countries worldwide.

IECEx is an international certification program that requires full compliance with IEC international standards.

Approved IECEx test laboratories conduct evaluations of products intended for potentially explosive environments. If the product meets safety requirements, an IECEx certification body issues an "IECEx Certificate of Conformity." This certificate allows direct access to multiple markets and confirms that the product complies with international standards, which can help facilitate compliance with local certification requirements.

The technical requirements and standards for demonstrating compliance are largely the same for ATEX and IECEx. Therefore, it is common in the industry for products to hold both ATEX and IECEx certificates.
