This standard was introduced in 2006 to meet the growing demand for sustainable valves. The lack of a harmonized standard for verifying and classifying the environmental impact of valve leakage to the atmosphere was the main driving force behind its development.

Unlike TA-Luft, all valves are tested in the same way, with three different classes to choose from and clearly defined test conditions.
